Chapter 6

Plopping down on the sectional in my game room, Key groaned and unbuttoned her jeans. “I think I ate too much.” She whimpered.

“You think?” I quipped, sitting next to her as she punched my arm. “Your fork was on my plate like we weren't eating the same thing.”

“When I ran out of shrimp, I had to get it from somewhere.” She shrugged, pulling a chuckle out of me.

I didn’t like anyone playing over my food, but her beautiful ass could get away with murder around me. Besides, I loved a woman who could eat and wasn’t shy about that shit.

“Hey, I don’t have to worry about anyone popping’ up and trying to fight me over you, do I?” she asked while throwing her leg over me, straddling my lap. “Like that time Tia came over here trying to question me about being over here so late. What happened to her, anyway?”

I laid my head back on the top of the couch and smirked up at her. “She came over here trying to question you,” I said. “I’ve never put another woman outside of my family before you, and I never will.”

My eyebrows pinched together when tears welled in her eyes. “What’s wrong? You can come before Nora, too, if you want.”

“Shut up.” She giggled, twirling her finger around the hem of my shirt. For the third month in a row, her nails were blue—my favorite color and the color I helped her choose when she sent me a picture of options from the nail shop months back.

“There’s no one else, Key,” I assured, looping my fingers between hers. “Let me go ahead and make that clear to you now. It isn’t fair for them to get compared to you. It isn’t fair for me to keep searching for you in someone else. I don’t wanna let myself down like that anymore.”

“When did you become so sweet?” she had the nerve to ask me. I stared at her like she’d lost her damn mind. “What? It’s a valid question.”

“You had really fucking friend-zoned me, huh?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’ve always been sweet to you. Ain’t no way you missed that.”

“Have you?” She cut her eyes and tapped her chin with her index finger like she had to think hard about it.

“Get off me,” I said, trying to move her.

“Nope, I’m stuck on you now.”

“Be mine, Kesia. Do me that honor.”

“Ask and you shall receive,” she teased through a whisper.

“Will you be my woman, Kesia Elle Dixon?”

“I’d love to be your woman, Rocco Jamal Jamison,” she revealed in my ear, then pressed her lips into mine. Before I could deepen our kiss, she pulled back and said, “Under one condition...”

“I should've known that shit was too good to be true.”

“You wanna hear the condition or not?"

“I need to hear it,” I emphasized, bringing her face closer to mine.

With her lips hovering over mine, she said, “Promise me that we’ll remain friends. That we won’t let our upgraded relationship make us forget where we started.
